Wohlfert Craft Distilling: Heritage, Heart, & A New Highlight

Written by LibDib | Sep 26, 2025 5:17:06 PM

Wohlfert Craft Distilling and operates a distillery and tasting room in Snohomish, Washington. Owned and run by John Wohlfert, a craft distiller with deep family roots in distilling, his lineage goes back to Prohibition era bootlegging.

As a veteran engineer, John enjoys the challenge of the math involved in creating consistently high-quality products. Around 10 years ago he began pursuing distilling more seriously, learning the rules (and the permits), building out the distillery, and launching production. John believes that baking and artisanal distilling do not provide a 100% repeatable product, so each batch has its own slightly different personality but is always of exceptional quality.

History & Philosophy
Wohlfert’s philosophy is built on heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation. The team drew on Great-Grandfather Johann’s bootlegger recipes from the 1920s, using traditional techniques refined with modern attention to purity (e.g. quadruple distillation, choosing “hearts” of the distillate). They love to experiment with flavored liqueurs and corn spirits (moonshine/corn liquor) with oak aging, natural coloration, and more.

Their Newest Product: Clutch Coffee Liqueur

One of the standout new releases from Wohlfert is Clutch Coffee Liqueur. Highly rated in competitions, praised by bartenders and mixologists, this liqueur was recently coined as “the best coffee liqueur made in the USA” by judges at the world competition.  With freshly brewed espresso notes, creamy vanilla, and a decadent lingering of toffee and chocolate, it can be poured on ice cream, put in a favorite espresso martini, or a morning cup of coffee.

Reasons for Wohlfert

🍸 On-Premise (bars, restaurants, lounges)

• Mixology potential: the flavored liqueurs (like coffee) can be used for signature cocktails, and seasonal specials (like a pumpkin spice espresso martini).

• Local, artisan, quality and  attention to detail that resonates with customers.

• Flexible in engaging with tastings/events: John Wohlfert regularly does  “meet the distiller” events and supports bartenders with recipe cards.

🏬 Off-Premise (liquor stores, package stores, direct to consumer)

• Consumers are increasingly interested in craft, local spirits. Having the provenance (Snohomish, Washington roots) adds value.

• Gift potential & collector appeal: boutique packaging, limited releases, and speciality liqueurs.

• For cocktail enthusiasts buying at home (or gifting), having something like Clutch Coffee Liqueur stands out.

Recipe: Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini (with Wohlfert Coffee Liqueur)

Here’s a cocktail recipe that highlights the coffee liqueur, with a seasonal twist:

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Wohlfert Clutch Coffee Liqueur
  • 1 oz Vodka (Wohlfert’s High Beam Vodka works great)
  • 1 oz freshly brewed espresso (cooled)
  • ½ oz pumpkin spice syrup (or homemade: pumpkin purée + sugar + pumpkin pie spices + water, strained)
  • Dash of cream (optional, for a silky finish)
  • Garnish: espresso beans or a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice

Instructions:

  1. Chill your cocktail glass.
  2. Add coffee liqueur, vodka, espresso, and pumpkin spice syrup into a shaker with ice.
  3. Shake vigorously until you get a nice foam on top (espresso helps).
  4. Strain into the chilled martini glass.
  5. If using, float a small dash of cream on top by pouring gently over the back of a spoon.
  6. Garnish with a few espresso beans or a dusting of pumpkin spice.

Enjoy—this combines the rich coffee notes of the Clutch liqueur with seasonal warmth from pumpkin spice, balanced by vodka to lift the flavors.
